The Mind of The Artist, Man Chien : Abstract artist and visual poet shares about pushing boundaries beyond superficiality.
Let’s pick at the brains of these artists who are making waves and breaking moulds in their own unique ways.
We were curious at how they grind, stay true to their art, and keep it real, even when the odds are stacked against them. These folks are all about putting in the work and staying consistent, proving that passion and creativity know no boundaries.
In this edition, we present Man Chien.
Who are you and how do you make art?
MC: This is Man Chien. I make abstract and conceptual paintings.
Making art is a window to communicate.
What does staying consistent look like to you?
MC: I see consistency as repeated actions that develop into identity.
In my context of staying consistent, I see “changes” being a repetition of what I do.
Why is it important for you to keep doing what you’re doing?
MC: Making art is a window to communicate. To myself and the external world.
The process and the outcome of it kept me mentally and spiritually alive.
I used to make art as a form of self-healing. Now I work with art as a medium of communication.
How do you think you’re breaking boundaries?
MC: Physical boundaries are more solvable than mental boundaries. I work quite a bit with unlearning. By differentiating natural laws and superficials, I formed my own set of beliefs and systems along the way.
This has allowed me to understand if a boundary is superficially imposed or if it is my internal blockage. These are the initial steps I take if we’re talking about breaking boundaries.
What is the story behind your look?
MC: I was exploring the idea of Inception in the depth of art. I reworked a portrait I made of Kittie. It was done with pink paints, black marker and eyeliner. That portrait was painted on a piece of paper, it is a painted portrait, a work of art. I repaint that work of art on my face. By doing so, the question arises: have I just made “me”, become a piece of portrait art?
If this portrait precedes the conception of Kittie’s portraits, the portrait would be: A portrait of Man Chien’s painted face. If it exists after the conception of Kittie’s portrait, is it now: A picture of a portrait of Man Chien. The story narrates: I have become a portraiture, instead of solely Man Chien.
What’s your favourite product from this campaign?
M: All of it. Everything. Semua. 全部.
By differentiating natural laws and superficials, I formed my own set of beliefs and systems along the way. This has allowed me to understand if a boundary is superficially imposed or if it is my internal blockage.
Shifting the Paradigm, Out of the Chrysalis, Beyond the Box.
