Of Fairies' Gifts - MANDY YAP : Founder of Banana Fighter Activewear

The lady boss opens up about her obstacles and how she’s come out on the other side.

This Women’s Day, we’re coming together to admire the realm of fairies, where some of our own are the very fairies that grace it. In this Earthly realm, however, inner beauty shines on women, where to us, they’re seen as fairies anyway.

Magic seeps from their pores, and grace trails them as they walk by you. They embrace their boundless potential, embarking on the journey of their dreams. And we’re bringing that to you.

What’s one word or sentence to describe yourself?

MY: I am a person with many interests and hobbies, specifically sports, and that's why I am in an activewear business. I guess that's the only thing that is true about me being a Gemini haha

Describe womanhood in 1 word.

MY: Evolving.

Who is the most important woman in your life? How has she inspired you?

MY: Despite my mother and grandmother, who raised me and taught me important life lessons, I find the most important woman in my life through adulthood is myself—the younger days of Mandy. Everything I have experienced has inspired me to be a better version, ever-growing and never repeating foolish mistakes. But it was all necessary to happen to become the person I am today.

I aspire to be a woman who continuously shares positivity in pursuit of excellence and success.

What do you think a woman’s role is in 2024?

MY: I think we've done very well in being self-sufficient today, and with that, our cups are full and ready to pour with love and empathy to the younger generations.

What’s your favourite part about being a woman?

MY: We're able to be vulnerable and badass in situations we need to step into.

What accomplishments can you share or contributions do you aspire to make in support of women within your community?

MY: I think from my recent struggle, I've just healed from a terrible acne breakout all over my face during COVID-19 by changing my diet and eating only whole foods.

Think about dealing with oozing pus and bleeding acne every day, and whatever touches your face hurts, let alone feeling all ugly and shameful walking out of the house with broken skin. This experience has crushed my self-esteem.

Fast forward to today; I am healed, and the glow is real! This journey has made me dig deep within, psychologically and emotionally. I guess what I am trying to say is that having acne is normal, and most of the time when people look at you, they see you for who you are, not defined by your skin. Know that this will just be a phase, and believe that you can heal from it. There is so much more than just how superficial it sounds, but in support of women within my community, feel free to reach out to me if you are struggling the same way right now! I am open!
